How was today you might ask... not bad - felt like being liberated again - I can eat again what I want.
Muesli for breakie and soup and some leftover roasted veggies for lunch. An apricot and plum in the afternoon. Dinner was pizza - yes from scratch and superthin with zucchini, red onion, mushroom, spinach and cashew nuts. Woohoo. Was good. Some sweet roll pin dough dessert - great. I feel alive.
So what did I have last week?

1kg maple syrup
8 tomatoes

Day 7 - the last day...
Off to the beach at about 3pm for a catch up with friends and some nibbles. I brought a nice rock melon but also some popcorn. Yes you can make pop corn that is not greasy (full of butter, sugar, salt...)! Had to resist the free lemon ice tea they were sampling and also the other nibbles that were around. I did try the dried bananas. Yummy.
Dinner was another detox juice - getting sick of them ;-) and the leftover braised red cabbage and cherries as dessert. Wasn't that hungry. Or maybe I felt like nibbling on something - some more almond nuts with a ginger tea.
Right the cravings are there - I am making pizza this week, no doubt about it. I will definitely have bread and cheese, but also eggs. And I will also have a good piece or meat. Will I be detox free? No, I even wasn't last week - living in the city --- doh!
Will I go overboard next week? Well, I try not to but cant promise anything ;-)
So you probably ask yourself, was it worth doing this? Yes and for multiple reasons.
- I realised how much processed food we actually have - even the healthy options contain preservatives, additives, colouring agents you name it.. and of course sugar and or salt. Hopefully I will choose the healthier options.
- I also felt good about giving my body a break for a week - no meat, no dairy, no sugar, no eggs, no fuzzy drinks, no processed foods - I don't think it hurted my body at all.
- And the best thing - if you actually are prepared for it - it is actually not as hard as you would think. I did have heaps of fruit and veggies and lots of inspiring recipes. Nuts - lots of them on the side and you cant go wrong - at least IF you have the will to actually stick to it.
- Last but not least... Did I loose weight...? Well yes I did - I think it must be between 3-4 kg (8,5 - 9 pounds) And yes I don't mind. A few people said before I started - are doing it for the weight? You shouldn't loose any as you will be skinny... hum, I have to say, I still look the same and don't feel skinny. I actually feel more towards my ideal weight than before so that's a bonus plus I still can fit in the same cloths. LOL.
Hope you enjoy the ride and maybe you are inspired, maybe not and that's fine too. With all things, if you do it within reason and don't go overboard - it's fine and sometimes - I believe - even good for you. So my advice, if you decide to start a detox - don't starve yourself with only juice - you will only feel miserable and grumpy, but also eat lots of fruit and veggies and nuts on the side, your body will take what it needs and you only will have to go for number one a bit more often than usual! Have fun and take care.

Day 6 - the end is near
Today proofed to be not so easy. Lots of cravings... Danish pastry, lollies, cake, bread even fish. Wouldn't mind some bacon or smoked ham.
This morning started with the regular detox juice with cherries and Brazil nuts. Just realised that I haven't actually properly explained what my detox juice consists of:
squeeze 2 lemons
3 tbsp maple syrup (get the one without preservatives)
a pinch of cayenne pepper
water so you get a juice of about 700-750ml
Easy - you can but don't have to use water warm - some find it easier to drink.
Felt like getting something sweet in the bakery and later on like going out for dinner but both aren't really an option for the moment... I need to stay strong - just like last night - which was a good party btw, lots of nice people but not easy to go on only water especially if you are offered champagne and wine. Staying away from chips didn't prove too difficult.
Back to today - lunch was a detox juice and roasted veggies: nice tiny potatoes + kumara(sweet potato) + carrots + red onion + shallots + olive oil + pepper & salt + mixed Italian herbs and also a bowl of smoked capsicum and pumpkin soup (leftover from the other day).
At 4pm had a handful of macadamia nuts! Great those were. More cherries - they are so nice they taste like a sweet.
Dinner was roasted zucchini stuffed with mushroom, onion, celery, potato and some cashew nuts with red braised cabbage & apple on the side (I used honey instead of sugar and oil instead of butter) as well as a salad of tomatoes, lettuce, spring onion and macadamia nuts! Yummy.
One more day to go - the end is near ;-)

Day 5 - wow
Another day has gone by and again without too much problems, tiredness or stress. In a way this detox thing makes it really easy - I don't have to think too much what I am going to eat as I know it already - or sort of.
Today a bit more cravings - I have to admit especially drinking just a water at after-works drinks wasn't easy. Also felt like eating some bread or some pasta, or even baking some banana bread...
Question - will I do this thing for 5 days only and wrap it up tonight or will I go for longer...? Let's think about that one.
Second Question - Would I wanna have what my buddy had today and yesterday?
Since the pie 2 days ago, he had a pizza, smothered with sour cream and a chip sandwich, a chocolate doughnut, some more sugary drinks, peanut butter and jam sandwiches (again! he must love those to bits), pieces of chocolate, hot chocolate, more Le Snacks, some meat and egg and beeeeer. Fast food chain burgers for lunch and dinner - oh my!! Note they are from different 'restaurants' for the VARIETY.
WOW - am I then missing out on that much then??? .... Or do I fancy any of the above???... eh not really ;-)
So can I do this for another 2 days... well probably I can but than I'll wrap it for sure - just want to have some carbs and maybe a piece of meat too! And also a glass of wine too. Alright - will try my best.
Ok today my intake:
breakfast - detox juice + handful brazil nuts. Was hungry around 10.30 again - banana to get me going till around lunch - detox juice again + apple. Pear at around 4pm. Was starving at around 5pm - Nuts, nuts and nuts again. Yep brazil, almonds and cashew nuts. Another juice made out of 4 apples, 2 pears and frozen berries - great... love my juicer.
One thing is sure I'm not hungry after all that. Tonight a birthday party - not sure what I'm going to drink - maybe I make myself a nice drink and take that with me as I need to have something in my hands - will try to be strong and stay away from all alcoholic drinks tonight. To be cont.

Day 4 - Still going
Nice one this morning - felt good, not tired and not that hungry. Regular detox juice as usual. A banana and a handful of almonds to complement the juice.
Not hungry until 11ish. Had a pear and I was fine.
Juice just before lunch time (11.45am). Mesculun Salad and tomatoes for lunch. Also a handful of Brazil nuts. Yummy.
Around 3 o'clock had an apple. Fine I was. My colleague asked if I wanted a sandwich (some leftovers from a meeting) - I was very tempted to say YES but realised the answer had to be NO... bummer. I just love bread. I think I miss it more than meat. I also don't like that I have constantly check packaging and realise that virtually everything has preservatives in it, or colouring agents or some funny number... Not good. Even sun dried tomatoes from a jar. Short story - only one way to avoid all this - DIY (do it yourself). Maybe the good old days were indeed "good" days from that perspective, house wives preparing food and preserving fruit etc. Nowadays it all needs to go fast and people have no time to cook. If it takes longer than 20min to prepare, a lot of people cant be bothered anymore... more processed food means also more unhealthy people. Why was obesity not a problem in the past but is now a big one? New Zealand is the 3rd fattest country in the world - haha I mean has the 3rd highest obesity level in the world (26.5%) after Mexico 30% and the USA with a whopping 34.#%. SHOCKING. Reasons given in this NZ Hearald article :
We're eating cheap but wrong food, we see advertised. Some parents aren't monitoring what their children are having and they are sitting in front of screens all day (TV, computer etc).
There seems to be also a link between poverty (or lower socio-demographics) and being overweight.
At 6.15pm another handful of Brazil nuts and some almonds. I think I could (almost) live on nuts. Not really but I'm glad they can be part of my detox regime!
After that I made a juice from 3 celery stalks and 3 carrots. Nice one. Wanted to added some water cress to give it some extra zing but didnt have that in the house.
Tonight I didnt feel like the detox juice after the carrot and celery juice I made before. Instead roasted capsicum, tomatoes & kumara soup. No cream with it. Tasted very nice. Second course: a big salad (tomatoes + mesculun lettuce again + almonds + pumpkin seeds + spring onion with olive oil + red wine vinegar + pepper & salt). Again very nice - dear I say.
Have too many apricots I cant eat so decided to play with fire... made some apricot jam then I had to - yes I HAD TO - taste a wee bit to see if it was good - so yes I did up having a pinch of sugar in my blood today - oh God I have sinned today. But hey probably nothing compared to the sugary vinaigrette they serve in McDonald's - yes even in salad they add sugar! Funny if you think you choose the healthy option in those fast food chains.
Haven't heard from my anti-detox buddy. Might have to ring the hospital. I hope he is not dead after an overdose of SUGAR last night. To be continued...

Day 3 - wow we're half way
Yep, the week is flying as usual.
This morning I had the juice of 2 grape fruit instead of lemons to make my detox drink as I ran out of lemons. Same extra cayenne pepper + 3.5 tbsp maple syrup + 700ml water.
Had a banana first to put a bit of a layer in my stomach.
Not really hungry until 11.20am. Good. Like that ;-) Had another banana.
Another detox juice at around 12am. Busy at work so time flew by.
When I came home at around 5.30pm had a ginger tea (hot water with sliced fresh ginger - yummy). Then a handful almonds and a handful brazilian nuts.
Dinner was roasted asparagus (2 bunches) with olive oil and pepper & salt. Also had a lovely fruit juice - the first one I made with my new juicer that finally arrived today. Would recommend that juice btw : 1 full beetroot + 3 apples + 3 carrots - yummy - serves 2 big glasses or 3 medium glasses btw.
Pretty full now. One more detox juice to go this evening ;-)
Wee update on my anti-detox buddy. His food intake was absolutely filthy. Can barely believe what he actually ate ... here we go (again I wouldnt recommend this to ANYone):
Dinner last night was a special sandwich, which was and inspired by Elvis Presley (before his un-timely death).
To make it,
Fry some sausage,
fry some bacon,
put a lot of peanut butter on some bread,
place the fried meat on the peanut butter,
melt plenty of cheese over the top,
cover with mayonase and another piece of bread.
Serve with potato chips, drizzeled with tomatoe sauce for colour, and some beer.

Afterwards your mouth will feel terrible, so cleanse your palate with icecream and chocolate. You will not feel any better. You will wake up in the morning still bloated.
See also picture of lunch today. A steak pie with a poached egg on top (and beer too).
He is definately going to put some weight on.

Going Strong - Day 2
So far so good. This morning I felt fine and had the regular detox juice again. This time I must have put less maple syrup in it as if felt much more acid. Eating an extra grape fruit probably didn't help. Had to eat a pear to soften the acid in my stomach. Luckily it didn't last for too long.
Yesterday, I mentioned I was going to watch a movie and caught up with my anti-detox buddy, my mate who is doing the opposite of my diet, (btw I would NOT recommend that anyone).
He started his day with a peanut butter and cheese sandwich (on soft white bread), a bowl of ice cream and a cup of tea with milk and sugar. When I saw him, he craved for fruit and veggies (he actually eats very healthily and doesnt eat fast food hamburgers etc normally ).
His lunch was made of bacon and egg pie and a apple turnover with whipped cream and a sugar crust. Yes the greasier for him, the better. Gosh... Dinner never really happened, he didn't feel hungry, so he ate some stuff like crackers and so but also some chocolate, white bread with peanut butter and a few glasses of wine. Yes I am not having that alcohol but yeah he can of course.
This can't be healthy. Luckily he is skinny and normally has a healthy diet, so one of of all the "badies" will be ok.
His meals today : fried egg and cheese toasted sandwich, cup of tea (with milk and sugar) and chocolate. Lots of soft drink. (replaced the water he would normally have). Lunch was processed meat sticks, a sausage roll and a small cake. Those cracker things called Le Snack - what an original brand name - were snacked on during the day (not because he is hungry but more for the sake of it). Dinner - again he isn't that hungry so he made a very greasy meal - Lots of butter with cheese and un-lean (fatty red) meat. Potato chips on the side with beer as well as ice cream and chocolate for dessert.
Right, back to my menu now!
After breakie, I had some banana at around 10am - I must admit I was needing some extra energy then.
Lunch, the regular detox juice (700ml) with a pear. That lasted me till 4pm when I got a little dip again. Another pear this time.
We're all good now. Just finished 2 massive plates of baked veggies - yes I WAS hungry(lots of kumara, red onion, yellow onion, 2 new potatoes, some pumpkin, capsicum and yes olive oil, pepper and salt and fresh herbs - thyme and oregano baked in the oven for about 4omin at 200 C.) It was devine... had a lovely guest for dinner who insisted on a second serving. So this detox thing doesn't mean I have to starve myself (or others) or flush like a crazy man. Just a few more times to the loo per day, that's all. I am surprised that I am not craving anything - lets keep it that way!
Dessert was cherries and an apricot. Now some fruit tea (ginger + hot water).

We've officially started - day 1
[Above picture The fruit I'm going to conquer this week - or at least going to try to.]
Wanted to start with one or two grapefruit this morning + my detox drink but ended up having the following on my empty stomach:
3 apricots
5 cherries
700ml detox juice
Felt really good and not tired, the whole morning! My colleague was surprised. Was too busy this morning so I ended not having any snacks at all instead of the regular biscuits or so (I only had 2 strawberries from our work fruit basket). Survived my Monday morning meeting without my regular juice blend - some drink I have normally since I dont drink coffee (contains some sugar I think).
Lunch :
1 prune
1 apricot
2 strawberries
700ml detox drink
The afternoon went quick and only around 4.45pm I start feeling a bit hungry. Saw some chocolate fudge and Xmas Stollen on the back counter for all staff but was brave enough to stay off it. Yeah
Went for a run with my colleague at around 6.20pm. Just before I had a small banana and a handful roasted almonds for some extra energy (just in case). Came home just after 7pm to have another handful of almonds. Just love them and I also need protein! It was hot outside so the run wasnt easy.
Dinner was a mesclun salad, incl. minth and edible flowers in combination with 2 Roma tomatoes and 1 avocado. Vinaigrette to add some extra taste (1 tbsp white wine vinegar + 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil + less than 1 tsp hot English mustard + pepper and salt) yummy!!
Off to the cinema (big screen @ a friends I should say) now with some cherries for when I get hungry again - no, no pop corn for me!
Will keep you posted!
Preparation day for my first detox regime - Day 0
Yep that's right. I'm gonna do my first detox ever. Not sure what to expect but lets see how far we get.
Today started early and I thought I might as well prepare my food intake of next week... So I started looking in a few cooking books to see what I can be inspired by with following my the rules of this detox regime:
"1 week - possibly longer- complete detox for beginners" - so no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no pasta or bread and no sugar... also no coffee, no black tea and no alcohol.
so what are we having?
Lots of self-made lemon juice with cayenne pepper (for the metabolism) and some maple syrup (for energy) - we're talking the good quality maple syrup btw - not the one with lots of additives .... and this concoction will be supplemented with fruit and veggies.
I dont want to set myself up to fail but on the other hand I want a proper detox so yes NO sugar but more importantly - for me - no bread - that might be a though one for me coming from Belgium and being brought up on nice quality bread. I love bread and have it every day... Also no biscuits or other sweet things .... only healthy snacks hum, hum it will be a challenge.
Anyway, after doing some research, I made a plan of what I'm going to eat and drink - yes just finished a bid on an online auction site and just was successful to get a nice juicer - looks sort of semi professional ;-) yes we are going to make our own juice from apples, carrots, celery etc!!
Going a detox shouldnt be boring I decided so I'm gonna have nice treats like cherries and other nice self-made fruit juice along with nuts - yep no soft drinks nor processed pre-made juice.
So what's my intake tomorrow?
breakfast:
700ml of lemon detox drink - hope it tastes not too bad - I start to wonder now ... cayenne pepper and maple syrup combined with lemon juice...
and fresh sweet grapefruit - one or two depending on how hungry I am.
morning tea:
apple
lunch:
700ml of lemon detox drink
and royal portion of fruit salad - plain without sugar nor yohurt/(ice) cream
afternoon tea(only if hungry):
banana to give me some energy
dinner(not too late - 6pm-ish):
700ml of lemon detox drink
and roasted pepper and kumara soup
cherries as dessert.
that's it for today!
btw have also one friend who will try to match my regime this week and another friend who will do exactly the opposite of what we will do.
He's only going to eat what we cant eat... but he won't eat what we will ...
I know a bit controversial but hey - that's part of the fun. He's a healthy bloke and skinny so it will be interesting to see how he will feel and look ;-) more about that soon!
